Our History

Glebe means Ecclesiastical or of the Church.

When Murton Colliery was sank in 1838, one of the first districts in the Hutton Seam was named the ‘Glebe’ because the miners related it to Church owned land on the surface above.

The Colliery closed in 1991 and The Glebe Centre was named so in honour of the memory of the men, women and boys who worked in the Colliery during the 153 years of its existence.

The Glebe Centre was conceived from a pride in its heritage and constantly strives to promote a brighter future for the community it serves.

In order to preserve the memories of the past for future generations we have a gallery and heritage room where we have a permanent display of photographs and memorabilia together with four of the Miners Banners from Murton Colliery.

Murton Welfare Association, a registered charity, manage and run the day to day operational activities associated with The Glebe Centre, The Pavilion and the recreational sports grounds.
